Contribution to understanding the origin and the genesis of the Nišava riverside valley fauna

The fact that very early biologists registered an extraordinary faunistic richnes in the greater area of Niš(Nišava’s riverside) is pointed out. The conditions that contributed to this variety are analyzed. Theimportance of geological history of this region is explained, from the ancient lake phase trough the glacialepochs including the present state. The dilemma about lake terraces and the water level of the Neogene lakesystem is discussed. A list of gorges, speleological objects, springs, mountain tops as habitats of endemic andrelict species is given. All the endemic and relict species in these habitats are listed.
