Activity of four local plant extracts against Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici
Abstract
Aqueous, ethanol, and methanol crude extracts of four local plants, namely Cotula cinerea (Gartoufa), Ziziphus lotus (Sedra), Peganum harmala (Harmel), and Retama raetam (R'tem), were evaluated for their inhibitory effect on the mycelial growth and spore germination of four strains of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp lycopersici. (the causal agent of tomato wilt disease). Alcoholic extracts from C. cinerea and Z. lotus demonstrated a strong inhibitory effect, reducing radial growth by up to 72.2% and completely inhibiting (100%) spore germination across all four fungal strains. In contrast, the alcoholic extracts of R. raetam and P. harmala exhibited a moderate inhibitory effect (less than 52%). A Tukey post-hoc test (p < 0.05) revealed no significant difference between the efficacy of the ethanolic and methanolic extracts, with only two exceptions. Conversely, the aqueous extracts from all plant materials did not show a high inhibitory effect on mycelial growth, with inhibition rates ranging from 0% to 16.3%.
