Abstract

Nitrocellulose thinner is a volatile industrial solvent whose prolonged inhalation poses renal risks, though the reversibility of such effects remains under-researched. This study evaluated renal biochemical and histological changes after withdrawal from subchronic nitrocellulose thinner vapour (NCTV) exposure in male Wistar rats. Twenty-four rats were assigned into three groups: control, 90-day NCTV exposure, and 90-day exposure followed by 90-day withdrawal. Serum electrolytes, urea, and creatinine were determined using colorimetric and enzymatic techniques. Kidney tissues were processed for histological examination using hematoxylin and eosin staining. Results showed significant increases in serum urea and creatinine following 90-day exposure, indicating impaired renal function, alongside moderate glomerular alterations and early sclerotic changes. Following withdrawal, serum urea and creatinine levels decreased significantly, returning to control values, accompanied by marked improvement in renal architecture. Subchronic NCTV exposure induces reversible renal dysfunction. Withdrawal promotes substantial biochemical and structural recovery, highlighting the regenerative potential of renal tissue.
