Abstract

Medicinal plants contain several natural bio-active compounds having enormous therapeutic potency and are widely used in synthesis of several drug formulations. Operculina turpethum (L) Silva Manso (family: Convolvulaceae), frequently known as Nishoth and Tihudi, is one of such valuable vine native to India. Its different plant parts have several ethno-medicinal and pharmacological attributes. From ancient era, it is used as anti-tumor, anti-fungicidal, anti-hypertension, asthma inhibitor, antifungal, antiulcer and antioxidant agent. The current study is a compilation of morphological and pharmacological activities of Operculina turpethum along with validation its geographical distributions and phytoconstituents to get brief idea about its therapeutic potencies. The plant consists of several phyto-constituents including α- and β-turpethein, turpethinic acids, lanosta-5-ene etc. The study deals with complete plant profile based on its availability and propagation practices. This review deals with each and every part of O. turpethum, along with its structural morphology, phytochemical constituent availability and therapeutic properties.
